OECD Report on Education

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have released a study that suggests that the use of technology in schools may have little impact or at worst a detrimental impact on learning. This high level report comparing the use of technology and outcomes across the world confirms what other researchers such as John Hattie have already identified: too often the learning benefits of technology are heavily outweighed by their costs.

Computers, tablets, smart phones and the internet all have a place in schools but it is important that they are used appropriately and intelligently at all times. The technology is another tool for teachers to use and, like any tool, can be used highly effectively or not so effectively depending on the task. Ensuring that technology is used at the right time when alternative methods would not lead to a better outcome is an important check that all teachers and students should consider carefully. At HGS we strive to ensure that technology enhances the learning process through careful investment in and deployment of resources both in terms of hardware and software.
