Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing

Pastoral Care

At KE VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys we have a proud history of outstanding pastoral care. We have worked hard to develop a safe and supportive community in which our young men and women can thrive. At its core pastoral care is underpinned by positive relationships between pupils, their parents/carers and staff working together to ensure the best outcomes for all.

We have a strong pastoral team in place which consists of Form Tutors and a Head of Year for each year group, overseen by Key Stage Coordinators as well an Assistant Headteacher (11-16 & Post 16). Form Tutors move up through the years with Form groups, this enables them build in depth and long-lasting relationships with both parents and their tutees.

Specialist Heads of Year guide pupils through various important stages of their journey from the transition from Primary to Secondary school, to supporting pupils through their GCSEs and prepare them for the next steps in their educational journey (in Year 12 and 13).

As well as Form Tutors, Heads of Year and Key Stage Coordinators, we also have a number of other people who support our young men and women in school, including Student Support Staff, the SENCO, a Post-16 Officer as well as an Assistant Headteacher in charge of Student Support. These adults work hard to build pupils self-esteem, mental resilience and independent study skills to not only support them during their education but also prepare them for later life.

Who to contact?

If you have a pastoral concern, your son/daughter’s Form Tutor would be the first port of call. This can be done via telephone or (preferably) via email. In any email communication, please state your son/daughter’s full name, form, who you are and indicate what the issue is, to aid the staff member who will respond to you. Please be mindful that staff can be teaching all day, running clubs at lunchtime or be in meetings, so quick response is not always possible.

If the form tutor cannot successfully deal with the concern, or the matter is more serious, then the next link in the chain is the Head of Year. The Head of Year will liaise with the Designated Safeguarding Lead if there is a safeguarding concern. Please follow the escalation process appropriately.
