16PhysicsBigQuiz2014OnMonday27thJanuarytwelestudentsromYear9wenttotheso-calledPhysicsBigQuizanannualeentheldattheUniersityoBirminghamintheGreatHall.Weletschoolintheminibusandarriedatabout940.WethentookourseatsinourthreeteamsoourcompletingaPhysicswordsearchwhilstwaitingorallotheotherschoolstoarrie.Onceeeryonehadtakentheirseatsweweregienanintroductionandthequizbegan.Thereweresixroundsintotal.ThelastroundwasaspecifcroundontheGAIASatelliteandtheMilkyWaywewereinormedothisparticularroundbeoretheeentsowecouldreisethistopic.Aterwehadcompletedthreeroundswehadlunchollowedbya45-minutelectureromanastrophysicistwhichwaseryinormatieandenjoyable.Thenwecompletedthelastthreerounds.TofnishwehadtheAwardsCeremonywherethetopthreeteamseachwonmedals.Eachschoolcouldenterasmanyasthreeteamswhichwedid.Outothe94teamsenteredourhighestplacedteamfnishedfthsotheresachallengeornextyearsYear9toimproeuponthisItwasagreatdayoutorallousandwearehopingtohaethechancetotakepartinanysimilareentsintheuture.CalebBrownTRIPSANDvISITSFootnoteTheresultswereverytightindeedatthetopendwithonlyafewpointsseparating1stand6thplaces.CongratulationstoBishopVeseysGrammarSchoolmyoldschoolforcomingtopMrJonesBiologyfeldtriptotheNaturalHistoryMuseumIcannotthinkoasinglefeldinBiologyorMedicineinwhichwecanclaimgenuineunderstandinganditseemstomethemorewelearnaboutliingcreaturesespeciallyourselesthestrangerliebecomes.ThisquotationromLewisThomasreallysumsuphowyoungmindslearnandwhatbetterwaytolearnthantoisitoneothemostprestigiousmuseumsontheplanetLondonsNaturalHistoryMuseum.ThismuseumbroughtawetoourYear13Biologysetandexceededalloourexpectations.FromtheelegantarchitecturetotheextremelyinterestingexhibitstotheSpiritTourwewereallowedtoexploretheworldandmostimportantlyHistory.WearriedinLondonbytrainandateremergingromtheSouthKensingtonStationthesheersizeothisextraordinarybuildingbecameapparenttous.Itsintricatearchitecturethatincludedtallpillarsandgargoylescaptiatedeachandeeryoneous.Theentirebuildingwasawonderinitsel.Onenteringthemammothmuseumweweregreetedbyagiantdinosaurskeletonwhichwasindicatieothewondersyettobeseenatthemuseum.Eerythingwasabsolutelybeautiuleenthetoiletswerepalatial.Whenweprogressedurtherintothemuseummoreandmoreincrediblethingsmadethemselesapparent.Aterexceedingourinitialexpectationsthemuseumcontinuedtoamazewithexhibitsthesizeoabluewhaleliterally.variousspecieswerepresentinthisroomandwesawanimalsthatwewereamiliarwithandsomewhosenameswedidntknowhowtopronounce.Theentiremuseumwasanexperiencewhichwewillallcherish.Theexhibitswerebreathtakingandtheactswerereallyinterestingwhowouldhaeknownthatwewouldseea11scalebluewhaleThiswastheeducationalpartothefeldtrip.TheSpiritTourallowedustoseeaarietyospeciespreseredinmethylatedspirithencethename.Thespiritwasusedtoensurethatbacteriaarekilledespeciallysaprophyticbacteriawhichwouldotherwisedecomposetheorganisms.TheSpiritTourhoweerwasallaboutsciencenotsentiment.Attheendothetourwesawwhatresearchtookplaceinthemuseumsomeowhichisreallyground-breaking.TheremainderothetimeatthemuseumwasspentintheDinosaurexhibition.Beingtakenbacktoourchildhoodascinationwiththemwasanexperienceenjoyedbyall.ThehighlightothisexhibitionhadtobethemechanicalscalemodeloaTyrannosaurusRex.ArjanLalMayurParmar
