This academic year has again progressed at great speed with so much going on both inside and outside the classroom. Yet again and as with our termly Newsletters this edition of The Bridge is packed with wonderful articles, features, reports and stories of success, achievement and enjoyment. I am delighted to see the huge success enjoyed by our students with regard to the various University Summer Schools in association with the Sutton Trust. We will have students attending Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick and Birmingham Universities during the course of the summer. This is a wonderful achievement and I know that our students will gain much from the experience. This is what HGS is about and it makes me very proud to be the Head of such a great institution. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Elaine Brown, Mr Adam Kilcullen as well as Rebecca England and Gus MacDonald at Ammac Design for all their expertise and support for The Bridge. Haec Olim Meminisse Iuvabit. Mr Simon Bird, Headmaster THE BRIDGE 2 Once more unto The Bridge... Welcome to the 2016 edition of The Bridge, a celebration of all things Handsworth Grammar School and topics as diverse as Shakespeare, teachers’ feet and Facebook! So much has happened since last summer’s edition – the most exciting of which is the new Reading Room, although I understand that the Astro turf may hold more fascination for most of you! I hope you enjoy reading about the many and varied achievements of our school in my fifth edition as editor. I would like to thank the outgoing editors, Pip and Gurdeep, for their continuing support and for contributing honest accounts of their first year at university. My thanks also go to the many teachers who have contributed in all sorts of ways and to Mr Bird and Mr Kilcullen for their support and expertise. We are always looking for ideas and contributions to the magazine and there are plans to appoint an editorial team for next year’s Bridge. Look out for opportunities next term! Once more unto The Bridge, dear friends!
