SPORT Sam Grego Franciszek Czech Dominik Szkatula Daniel Olatundun HGS Success at King Edward’s Invitational Athletics Event Handsworth Grammar School boys delivered a number of outstanding athletics performances at the recent King Edward’s Invitational athletics competition, held at Norman Green Athletics centre in Solihull. Indeed the junior boys from HGS achieved their finest haul of medals for some years with a number of outstanding performances to leave their opponents in their wake. The team’s success was characterised by an outstanding individual performance from year 7 pupil Daniel Olatuntun, who won both the 200 meters and the Triple jump. An outstanding all round sportsman, Daniel is also a fine footballer and plays for the school team. He set a new personal best in the 200m of 25.7 seconds and in the triple jump he recorded an amazing 10.02 which would have won the year 8 competition too! This time and distance would place Daniel right at the top of UK rankings for these events and augurs well for his future athletics career at Handsworth Grammar School. Francis Czech is another outstanding sportsman who achieved great success at the event. Francis won the year 8 shot put with a huge distance of 10.39 before adding a second place in the 400m with a time of 62 seconds. Francis is also a footballer during the winter and is part of the Birmingham City development squad, where he is building his reputation as a goalkeeper. Sam Grego destroyed his opposition with a blistering run in the 100m with a time of 12.3 seconds. This is a very quick time for a year 8 boy and we look forward to Sam progressing in the sprint events in the coming years. More success followed in the year 8 triple jump where Dominik Szkatula hopped, stepped and jumped to win the event with a distance of 9.70. Our junior athletes really led the way at this important event and we hope that perhaps one or two of them will follow in the footsteps of some of Handsworth Grammar School’s finest athletes, who have gone on to represent their country over the years
