CENTENARY OF THE OLD BOYS’ SWIMMING CLUB 2019 An entry in The Bridge dated Easter 1919 reported the establishment of an “Old Boys’ Swimming Club” which would operate on Friday nights at Grove Lane Swimming Baths. This was a prophetic announcement, as a hundred years later the Club is still in existence, still teaching youngsters to swim and play water polo and in the middle of the celebrations of its Centenary Year. The Club is no longer held at Grove Lane Baths as they are now closed down but it is still running. Events now take place at Handsworth Leisure Centre and it is here that many of the events to mark this milestone will take place. The events are listed in the Calendar of Events shown to the right. Our principal event is a Centenary Dinner to be held in September. Here former members of the Club will be celebrating with pupils of your age, who we hope will carry the banner of the Club for another hundred years. She also worked as secretary on various committees and her excellent skills also came to the fore when she organised the annual Speech Day and 11+ Day. Before joining HGS she worked with her husband, Peter, at their Grove Lane sports shop and she took a keen interest in sport. She was a member of Birchfield Harriers and also organised a local ladies’ running club. She was a caring person who took a genuine interest In the welfare of others and above all else always thought of others, even when she was very ill. Her close friend, Rebecca Hill, who was the School Office Manager at HGS at the same time as Hilary, commented that she would be remembered as a beacon of unselfishness. She was never one to complain or show an ounce of self- pity as she fought her long illness; she was an inspiration to us all. Hilary will be sadly missed at our regular reunions and our thoughts and sympathies go to Peter who, together with friends and family, was incredibly supportive to Hilary throughout their long and happy marriage.
