As we approach the final weeks of the academic
year, it is with great pride that I reflect on another
memorable chapter in the story of House Alfred.
A Strong Start some of our youngest members
Our Year 7 pupils have made an exceptional start
to life at Handsworth Grammar School, and in
enrichment day house sports, Year 7 achieved
a victory in the House Debate competition, also
securing 3rd place in Handball and 4th place in
Basketball. Their willingness
Year 8 pupils have been a standout group this year,
delivering consistently strong performances. In
house sports, they achieved:
• 1st place in Basketball
• 2nd place in Football
• 3rd place in Handball
This is an outstanding set of results, and I
would like to commend Year 8 for their excellent
contribution to House Alfred.
Beyond sports, individual successes have also
been noteworthy. Luke McKinnon secured 3rd
place in the Year 8 Connect-4 competition, while
our Year 10 pupils demonstrated strong strategic
ability with a joint 2nd place finish in House
Chess.
Recognising Excellence
A particularly special mention must go to pupils from
Mr Ward’s 8 Alfred form. The following pupils each
contributed over 350 house points – an outstanding
achievement that reflects remarkable consistency,
effort, and commitment throughout the year:
• Luke McKinnon
• Ranbir Matharu
• David-Andrei Dumitra
• Derick Simon Okongwu
• Jovan Sangar
Their contributions have been instrumental in driving
House Alfred forward and exemplify the dedication
we strive to foster in all members of the house.
Commitment to Sustainability and Community
The continuation of the paper recycling initiative led
by Mr Ward’s 8 Alfred form, alongside the battery
recycling programme now driven by 7 Alfred,
highlights our ongoing commitment to sustainability,
with students leading the way by setting an example.
Looking Ahead
House Alfred is not just about results – it is about
community, effort, and supporting one another to
achieve our very best. Together, we look forward to
ending the year on a high and continuing to build on
the proud legacy of House Alfred.
Mr D. S. Bansal
All members of the Nelson house, from every year
group, have gotten stuck in and represented the
Nelson house strongly this year. Every house point
has counted towards us being in a strong position for
the final stretch of the year.
Our 7N’s have contributed to the house competition
strongly this year, with a victory for Reuben Barham
in the House Chess tournament and a 3rd place
finish for Jason Odaghara. They have also worked
together strongly as a form to achieve a 2nd place
for house handball and basketball and a 3rd place for
house football.
8N have had a very strong year, continuing with their
successes from last year. There was a 1st place for
the house football and handball competitions. They
achieved an impressive 26-0 victory against Galahad
in the house football. They were also awarded a
3rd place for the house basketball tournament. Well
done to Reuben Dhillon, Ishaan Parwana, Daniel
Nachkebia Udeagha, Muhammad Maqsood and
Eesa Kalshekar for their Culture Cup victory too.
Not only have 8N shown off their sporting prowess
this year, they were also in 2nd place for the house
spelling bee. A special ‘shout-out’ for Sifat Hossain
who was artist of the month in December and a
congratulations for Aksh Gajbe, who secured an
impressive 1st place, showing exceptional skill and
determination for the junior badminton tournament.
9N have been demonstrating our HGS CARES
values incredibly well this year having the most anti-
bullying ambassadors. I also want to congratulate
Mikaeil Syed for his win in the House Mastermind
competition with Napoleon Bonaparte as his
specialist category. A well done to Omid Haidari for
his victory in the house spelling bee too.
Our year 10 students have worked together well as
a form and have achieved a strong and well fought
2nd place finish in the house football, handball and
basketball competitions.
I want to congratulate our new House Captain Treyan
Patel, alongside Usman Shah who has been given
the role of mental health ambassador, as well as
Gurdaat Singh, Vyar Younis, Haleemah Begum and
Husnain Rafaqat who have joined the prefect team.
Come on Nelson! Let’s lift the house trophy again this
year! One final push needed!
Miss Saleem
