As we reach the end of the summer term, Handsworth Grammar School is about to close its doors on another school year and consign to history the latest chapter in the story of its ongoing success. The 2026 World Cup in North America will reach its climax at the same time, after a month of exhilarating football. Both events in different ways speak of similar goals,of seizing opportunities when they come, of contributing to a team and being part of something greater. Students here express in poetic terms what inspires them about the World Cup and explain how the different North American landscapes will create the perfect setting for all the dramatic action that lies ahead. ...and finally We the People In heat and cold, and there it stands, The U.S. of A carved in ink-stained hands. They were writing in gold The republic of freedom which is now so old. The father of whom was first in line He was creating a Republic, a place in time, Created this land of banished crime George Washington, the father of a nation, A dream in his mind, a process of freedom creation. Second comes a leader elected by landslide To politics he clung, let the people decide No monarchy, no king, no one to dictate, A little lion he was but still so great, With bare a hint of a flaw, freedom was a must Shot by a man he knew he couldn’t trust Hark! Here we have an apostle of democracy, However, freedom for all was still a fantasy He struggled to see civil rights for all he should bring. That would require a Martin Luther King. As he helped create a map of resplendence Let his name be imparted for the atlas of independence, Yes, I return to the main figure in this Revolution, George Washington, the father of the Constitution It would take a while however to achieve completeness Life, liberty for all, and the pursuit of happiness. Haris Hussain The Beautiful Game When I play footy with my lads, They often get so really mad, A failure to score can turn into a brawl, This really is no good at all Everybody you see wants all the fame, But the complete team is all to blame. A game is a game, so don’t go mad, Let’s deal with it lads! When I do score the craziest goal, I feel like I’m playing with all my soul, Me lads are shouting and with joy they scream, It feels so goo I’m in a dream. I am the G.O.A.T, I know it now, But how, why, me, why me, right now? My left foot was magic, but I don’t know how. Going I’m going for the championship, I know it’s true, I got all of the drip, The dream is really all that counts. My confidence is growing. It mounts and mounts. Aaron Kanda 57
