BRIDGE TRUST SOCIETY Former pupils of HGS are entitled to join the Society upon leaving the School. It is primarily a sporting organisation, but holds social events too, creating a forum where friends and colleagues can meet, talk about their life, academic progress and future, but also to forge bonds with those who have trodden the same pathway, whether it be recently, or a lifetime ago. The Society has a superb sports ground in Romilly Avenue, almost next door to the School ground. We are very proud of the quality of the facilities, with the skill and dedication of those preparing pitches being endorsed by a national award, given by the Institute of Groundsmanship, called “Volunteer Groundsman Team of the Year”. The photos show Philip Swann receiving the award from the sponsors, and the proud team of groundsmen. Five Old Boys teams play football there and their League, Birmingham AFA, actually hold one of their Finals at the ground annually. In the summer two Old Boys cricket teams play, with the 1st team being promoted to Div 6 of the Warwickshire League for the 2018 season. The ground is also hired by local community sports teams on Sundays and midweek, with birthdays, christenings and other social events held in the Clubhouse. Swimming and water polo take place at the Holly Road Leisure Centre also under the Old Boys banner. Our annual Coast2Coast cycle takes place in the summer, a different geographical challenge being selected each year. This year it is The Mumbles to Gloucester Docks. Many members use the facilities offered in the Clubhouse for social purposes and as a meeting point. Contact with the School is frequent, with School v Old Boys football, Head Boy and Girl speaking at the Society Annual Dinner, visits to the School for Prize Giving and Remembrance Day and cricket played on the sports ground by School teams. There is a place for YOU in the Society, whether you have a keen interest in sport, or prefer to partake in social activities. Contact me @ p.swann@btinternet.com 36
