VISIT OF ASSISTANT POLICE COMMISSIONER MARK ROWLEY QPM TO HGS On 12th January 2018 Assistant Police commissioner Mark Rowley, the second most senior police officer in the UK and the Head of UK counter-terrorism, visited us in school, to bring to a close a journey which had started over thirty years beforehand when he had been a pupil at the school. Mark visited the school in the same week in which he announced his retirement from the Metropolitan Police, and so it was quite poignant for him to return to the school where, as he told the sixth form students, “it had all started”. Mark recalled the time when he had been in a careers room in school and had almost by accident picked up a leaflet about careers in the police. Academically bright, he had won a place at the University of Cambridge before beginning his police career here in Handsworth, as part of the West Midlands Police. He told the students of his career in the police which saw him become the Chief Inspector of Surrey where he was in charge of some of the most infamous criminal cases in recent British history, including the investigation into the murder of Milly Dowling. He was quizzed by the students about his career and also his involvement in the investigation of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. He was frank and fascinating as he regaled tales from his long career. This was a great opportunity for current HGS students to welcome back a famous alumnus and we look forward to following the next stage of Mark’s career.
