Basketball has continued to grow at school. The Thursday evening club has students of all ages attending and the development of the players under the guidance of Mr Conway and Mr King has been substantial. They have been building a good strong base of players at KS 3 and they have been really doing well in their first season of playing competitive games. In the Bridge of July 2016, we wrote about the success of the Year 11 Futsal team who had won both the local and regional championships and were on their way to the national championships which were to be held in June 2016. The team performed very well in the national finals, but sadly did not proceed through the group stages and so had to be content with a place in the top eight of all of the schools and junior clubs in the country. The competition was actually won by a London club who were a specialist Futsal club, rather than our HGS team, which used the game as a method to improve our football skills. Our strong tradition in Futsal has continued to grow this year as the Year 7 team, under the coaching skills of Mr Griffiths our head of PE won the regional competition, and look destined for even greater success in the future. There are some very talented young futsal players in the squad and they proudly returned from the Birmingham Futsal Centre in late April with the trophy. The Year 7 football team also won the Aston Schools 5 aside tournament and represented the district at the regional finals where they came 4th. Squad: Arjun Toor, David Duru, Robben Brickcliffe, Saqib Nazaqat, Rahim Ali, Robert Callaghan, Mohit Naphray and Zakir Ali, Callum Mughal. The Year 7 football team also won the Aston Football League so overall it was a very successful season for them. No doubt they will have an exciting future together as they progress through school. Table Tennis continues to grow at school with the outside tables in constant use. This enthusiasm has continued into the after school club where the coach has a large group to instruct. The time invested in this club has been evident this year where the U16 teams both were runners up in the Birmingham Table Tennis championships. We have a number of younger players developing well so the future looks good. U16 A runners up - Salmane Nasri Elmi, Solomon Khan, Brijesh Karthigesu and Usman Razaq. (U16 B Runners up - Squad: Hanzblyth Camanzo, Vyom Patel, Camara Talburt and Hassan Raziq. Adan George in Year 10 continues to do well at Birmingham City FC and has been progressing through the system well. He often comes in to school talking about his match against Chelsea and other famous teams! 20 Sports round up... Squad: David Duru, Robben Brickcliffe, Saqib Nazaqat, Rahim Ali, Robert Callaghan, Mohit Naphray and Zakir Ali. Jordan Rickets in Year 10, became part of an elite group of athletes from HGS who have competed in the English Schools Athletics Championships. He was selected to represent the West Midlands at the championships which in 2016 were held in Gateshead, at the international stadium there. Jordan is a sprint hurdler and he finished a very creditable sixth place in the Junior Boys final in a time of 11.82 seconds. Jordan is hopeful of being selected once again this year, when the championships will once again return to the Alexander Stadium, here in Birmingham. SPORT Basketball has continued to grow at school. The Thursday evening club under the guidance of Mr Conway and Mr King has been substantial.
