39 CLUBS AND SOCIETIES The House system is now in its third year, and House William is moving from strength to strength. This year saw the scoring system being changed to allow the points accumulated from the House activities to become more significant in the overall final analysis. Josh Basi (House captain) and Saif Akram (Vice captain) were inspirational in the House assemblies, and helped motivate the students before their House events. At the time of writing, there have been over 21 House events. The theme of the photography competition was “My Summer,” and student from year 8 and 9 submitted entries which warranted points – congratulations to Talha Zubair (1st) for his aerial photograph overlooking Dubai. A special mention should go to Gurshaan Dillon, Neil Chen and Obaid Muhammad, for their quality entries about ‘holidays in the desert’, the ‘London underground’, and ‘reflections of the Sun’. Both the House Quiz, House Debate and House spelling is always competitive, and special thanks must go to all who took part. Our best placing from the House Quiz was second place from both year 8 and the sixth form. The theme of the House debate was about the purpose and merits of homework. Strong arguments from both sides of the debate were keenly fort. This year’s spellers were Jawad Ahmed (7W); Mohammed Fohpa (8W); Mohammed Ajmal (9W); Rais Mahmood (10W) and Manmrit Bains (11W) – all overcame the nerves and performed well in front of their peers during assembly. All of our sports boys should be proud of their efforts across a range of sporting activites. The House Football, table tennis, basketball, handball have seen strong team and individual performances across all year groups. The only winners for House William came in the year 8 annual Football tournament held at Goals. With the end of the year closing in, and the points being extremely close, the final day of events (Sport’s day) has become even more important. All pupils from each Form Group will be given the opportunity to make a final contribution in both track and field events. On a final note, recently House William received a thank you letter from our House Charity (Birmingham Children’s Hospital). Our support has been much appreciated, and we have raised over £3000 for the House charity. Our donations have helped with the funding towards a dialysis machine; a physiotherapy gym, and a wireless voice communications system for staff to communicate hands free. All pupils from each Form Group will be given the WILLIAM After winning the house cup for the first time last year, Galahad, like Leicester City in the premier league, began the year with high expectations. This year, we all started from scratch again with a new cohort of year 7 students making their first contributions. As house leader of Galahad, I have been keen to promote enjoyment, participation, competitive spirit, and a sense of camaraderie with other Galahad forms and indeed forms from other houses. At the time of writing, Mr Conway informs us that it is VERY close at the top, with very little separating the top three houses (including Galahad). Regardless of that, we have achieved some very notable successes during the year as follows : House Quiz winners – 7G AHNAF RAHMAN & FAISAL JAJEH, 8G DYLAN UPPAL & MANISH KALER, 9G MUSA IBRAHEEM & ALI SHAH, 11G EESA EJAZ & JUSTIN FLETCHER, VIth FORM JOSEF FEIVEN & MOHSIN SADIQUE 9G - Basketball winners – led by AMAR RUPRA who plays at a very high standard for City of Birmingham U14’s, as well as playing for the school year 11 team ! 9G – House football winners at ‘Goals’ 8G – House table tennis winners Yr 8 Table-tennis champion – THIEN TRAN Runner-up – KYLAN SANDHU Yr 8 – ISHMAEL MOHAMMED is an extremely talented young cricketer who plays for Warwickshire U13’s. Our two most notable successes on SIMS in each year group are : 7G – KRISHAN PATEL +172 FAISAL JAJEH +153 8G – KYLAN SANDHU +316 RAJAN AULAKH +249 9G – ROHAN NATH +215 JASBINDER SINGH +204 10G – AADAM ROGHEY +160 MAX MAHFOZULLAH +80 11G – BALKAAR BHOPAL +66 JUSTIN FLETCHER +64 Well done and thank you to everyone who has tried to make a positive difference – come on you super G’s ! : D Mr A.K.Campbell Yr 8 Spelling champion – SADIKUR CHOWDHURY, Yr 9 Spelling champion – MUSA IBRAHEEM, Yr 10 7G – Handball winners, AHNAF RAHMAN – Yr 7 House Photography YR 7 KAVISH BHOPAL (2ND) In addition to these house events, Galahad also had which recognises academic excellence, good behaviour, and extra curricular activities amongst other things. Our two most notable GALAHAD This has been a change for House Nelson; Traditionally we have led the way on the SIMS merit count and the events have simply supplemented the total. Changes in the scoring of individual events has now meant the event totals are on a par with the merit count, in fact this has changed things around completely for Nelson. We find ourselves languishing in third position on SIMS behind William and Galahad respectively however our great performance in the various House events has meant we are less than 100 points behind the leaders overall. Some of the highlights have included; 7 Nelson dominating Year 7 Inter- Form Football down at goals, where they achieved twice as many points as the second placed team. 8 Nelson, after disappointing Inter-Form performance last year came back in style finishing 2nd overall this year, which was a brilliant achievement. 9 Nelson continued their dominance of House Debating to make it 3 wins in 3 years for them. 10 Nelson and 11 Nelson sadly couldn’t repeat their successes from previous House Quizzes both however finishing a very respectful 2nd place in their competitions. Lastly a quick mention to Nelson House Co- Captains; Faheem and Nathan who leave HGS after 7 years. We wish them and all other Nelsons the best for the future. Mr M.Mohsin performance last year came back in style finishing 2nd overall this year, which was a brilliant achievement. Debating to make it 3 wins in 3 years for them. 10 after 7 years. We wish them and all other Nelsons Mr M.Mohsin NELSON
