Remembrance Assembly

Friday 8th November 2013 saw Handsworth Grammar School hold its annual Remembrance Assembly in Big School. The focus of our act of remembrance this year was through the medium of war poetry and a tribute to the life of Old Boy Richard Shearer who was killed in Iraq in 2005. Haroon Gulfraz, Head Boy, read the famous World War One poem Anthem for Doomed Youth, Catherine Munyarari, Head Girl read Remember Me and Mr Kafai read Paper Dove. The latter two poems are focussed on more recent conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Major Massey from the Staffordshire Regiment then gave a moving and poignant tribute to Richard Shearer which he also set in the context of the wider School community. A new plaque has been mounted underneath the World War Two memorial in Big School which commemorates Richard Shearer’s military service. Our grateful thanks go to Mr Keane and Mr Webster who made the plaque.
