OECD Report on Education

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have released a study that suggests that the use of technology in schools may have little impact or at worst a detrimental impact on learning. This high level report comparing the use of technology and outcomes across the world confirms what other researchers such as John Hattie have already identified: too often the learning benefits of technology are heavily outweighed by their costs.

Computers, tablets, smart phones and the internet all have a place in schools but it is important that they are used appropriately and intelligently at all times. The technology is another tool for teachers to use and, like any tool, can be used highly effectively or not so effectively depending on the task. Ensuring that technology is used at the right time when alternative methods would not lead to a better outcome is an important check that all teachers and students should consider carefully. At HGS we strive to ensure that technology enhances the learning process through careful investment in and deployment of resources both in terms of hardware and software.

HGS enjoys excellent GCSE Examination Results

Handsworth Grammar School attained an excellent set of GCSE examination results in the repeated light of considerable changes as a result of the continued overhaul of the exam system as well as volatility on a national scale. The overall picture at Handsworth Grammar School is one of consistent and sustained progress and very positive development. This is again due to the hard work and commitment of both staff and students alike. 45% of all entries were at A* and A grade which is up by 7% on 2014 and well above the national figure. 99% of students attained 5 or more A* to C grades and 98% attained 5 or more A* to C grades including English and Mathematics. Both sets of these figures are improvements on the 2014 results. 97% of all entries were at A* to C grade which again is an improvement on the 2014 results.

There was considerable and significant success across departments but it is worth noting that the ICT department attained outstanding results. At national level the Pearson (edexcel) exam board awarded 4% of ICT entries at A*, however Handsworth Grammar were awarded 42% of their entries at A* grade. Similarly Pearson (edexcel) awarded 15% of ICT entries A* or A grade at national level and yet 89% of Handsworth Grammar School entries were awarded A* or A grade.

31 students averaged an A grade across all their subjects and 44 students averaged an A grade across their Best 8 Subjects. Mohsin Ghandi and Hung Nguyen attained 9 A* and 2 A grades, Hummhad Mahmood and Rory Gaskin attained 8 A* and 2 A grades, Qasim Mushtaq and Rahul Patel attained 7 A* and 4 A grades, Raphael Dobrashian Yates attained 6 A* and 5 A grades whilst Syed Gillani attained 5 A* and 6 A grades.

Thus against a backdrop of continued national upheaval and considerable volatility it is clear that Handsworth Grammar School maintains its positive move forwards with regard progress and development.

HGS enjoys a very good set of A Level Examination Results

Handsworth Grammar School celebrated another year of stable A Level results. This is testament to the hard work and commitment of both staff and students and is set against the turbulent backdrop of the national picture of the Examination system which has seen fewer A grades awarded this year. The overall pass rate has risen to 99% and 52% of results were A* to B grades prior to when remarks are taken into account.

The vast majority of students were in the strong position of being able to accept their first choice University offer which has seen them being destined for top Universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick, Imperial and Birmingham.

Some notable performances include Manraj Danda who attained 3 straight A* grades and will be reading Mathematics at Imperial, Donte Nemdhard also attained 3 straight A* grades and will be reading Chemical Engineering at Churchill College, Cambridge University, Gurdeep Mall attained 2 A* and 1 A grade and will be reading French and Law at New College, Oxford University and Allia Mahmood who attained 2 straight A* and 1 A grade and will be reading Education at Birmingham University. Abdurahman Ajmal, Dhanish Amin and Krishan Lawrence all attained 3 straight A grades. At AS Level Jagjeet Sehmi attained 5 straight A grades whilst Arjun Virk, Shirrushtii Appan and Narvair Kahler all attained 4 straight A grades.
