Opening of the Ben Smolden Pavillion and 3G Pitch

The first X1 football team played against a HGS Old boys’ team on July 10th to officially open the new “Ben Smolden Pavillion” and our new 3G pitch. Ben, a former pupil of the school and now a school governor, was there to open our superb facilities, and he and the spectators were treated to a keenly fought contest between a young and energetic school team playing against a more experienced and wiser Old Boys’ team.

In fact, it was experience which won the day, as the Old Boys’ secured a narrow 3-2 victory in a game which was played in a great spirit. The school team was then treated to some real Handsworth hospitality back at the HGS club hose, were they were able to see the second half of the France v Belgium world Cup semi – final.

Many thanks to Ben and to the Old Boys’ club for making the evening so enjoyable for the school players. Hopefully a number of the students will go on to become regular players for the club.

Sixth Form Students Gardening on Soho road

Some of our year 12 students volunteered to help with gardening on the Soho road as part of the “Britain in Bloom” competition. The students are pictured working outside the old Handsworth Library, which is now part of a local college.

Wimbledon 2018

Eight of our finest sportsmen attended the opening day of Wimbledon 2018, along with Head of PE Mr Griffiths and Deputy Headteacher Mr Conway on Monday 2nd July.

Wimbledon was certainly at its finest as the sun shone brightly and our pupils were able to see some of the world’s finest tennis players in close up, as well as experiencing the very unique atmosphere of Wimbledon.

Our group had seats on court 2 where, among other things, they saw a classic game between the French players Gael Mofils and Richard Gasquet. Our pupils also had the chance to take part in the Wimbledon “Play zone” where they were able to play some short tennis, and receive coaching.

This was a fantastic day out and as ever our pupils were a real credit to the school.

Progress and Success despite GCSE Upheaval!

King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School has enjoyed an excellent set of GCSE results despite the national volatility and turmoil surrounding new courses and grading systems, with some outstanding individual results achieved by our hard working students. It is widely acknowledged that there has been much unpredictability this year (as last year!) in the light of major reforms and changes to the examination and assessment system. We are very pleased to report that the overall picture at HGS is again one of consistent and sustained progress overall as well as positive development. Approximately 50% of all entries were at 9-7/A*-A grade which is slightly lower than last year’s results although taking into account the change in the specifications it is not a valid comparison. The national figure is 20.5% for boys and girls and only 17.2% for boys, so our proportion of entries achieving the top grades is nearly 32.8% better for boys and is considerably higher than the national value. Overall 99.5% of all our entries were at 9-4/A*-C grades. National figures were 66.9% for boys and girls and 62.3% for boys, so our proportion of entries achieving a pass grade is 37.2% better for boys and is significantly higher than the national value.

Individually in Mathematics and English 98.6% of all entries were at 9 to 4 grade. This is an excellent achievement considering that the subject grades were no longer being proportionally matched to legacy pass rates. Our Attainment 8 and Progress 8 scores are in line with last year’s figures demonstrating positive progress and development with both scores being well above the national averages.

This is a wonderful achievement overall bearing in mind the changes that have taken place.

41 students attained 8 or more A* and A grades.

20 students attained 10 or more A* and A grades.

12 students attained straight A* and A grades – they were:

Matthew Baptiste, Ajay Chohan, Nayan Dey, Kai Ho, Sharujan Kunaruban, Fronz Lam, Ismaeel Mahmood, Mehtab Mann, Farhaan Mohammed, Thanjim Mohammed, Ali Rahman and Balpreet Singh.

We congratulate all of our students for their hard work and dedication to their studies, and wish them every success as they embark upon their A Level courses. We also congratulate and thank our dedicated staff who have supported their students every step of the way.

Year 7 Rewards Experience – Virtual Reality session

I was recently given the opportunity to take part in an interactive virtual reality session, where I, and some of my other classmates were able to use a Virtual Reality headset and controllers to participate in a competitive reaction game. We were also able to play Fifa 18 and Rocket League on Xbox one consoles.

The team of IT Specialists from OMG Gaming separated us into two groups, purple and yellow, for a bit of a friendly competition. The instructors kept a tally of the points we scored whilst playing a game of Fifa or Rocket League. Points were also earned from the VR game we played. At the end of the session, the instructors counted up the points for both teams and came to the conclusion that the Purple team had won.

When we were playing the games the atmosphere in the room was tense, however we thoroughly enjoyed the fully immersive, mind-blowing multiplayer VR experience. It was as if we were in a world of our own. It was lots of fun as many of us had never played on this system before and enjoyed the experience with friends in teams. We learnt that the gaming world has its own ‘language’ that they use and we used the cutting edge HTC-VIVE VR Systems. For most of us the VR experience was something new and exciting. The team also introduced the latest console games for us to play on Xbox One. It was both a competitive and co-operative experience. We had a great time and I would love to have more opportunities like this again.

Being a part of this session has motivated me to carry on working to my best ability at all times in the next academic year and achieving the most achievement points so that I can enjoy more exciting and fun activities like this VR experience.

YPP Success

The Dennis Edwards’ Citizenship Awards 2018 and the Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leaders Award

We visited Birmingham City University on Tuesday 17th July where the following students Rohan Bagga, Avinash Chohan, Krishan Patel and Saladin Ahmed collected their certificates and won the Silver award for their presentation on Life Skills. This work organised through the Young People’s Parliament (YPP) forms part of the Dennis Edwards’ Citizenship Awards which is an annual event bringing together young people from across Birmingham and the surrounding area. Our team did very well to be awarded the Silver certificate. We also have been awarded the Young Leaders Award through the auspices of the Archbishop of York Youth Trust. Congratulations.
