Food Preparation and Nutrition:
Through the Food Preparation and Nutrition curriculum, students develop the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to make informed food choices and prepare a range of nutritious dishes independently. They gain an awareness of the environmental, cultural, and ethical factors that influence food choices, while developing an understanding of the relationship between diet, health, and wellbeing. As a result, students are well prepared for further study and equipped with valuable life skills that support healthy and sustainable lifestyles.
Curriculum:
In Key Stage 3, students follow a practical and engaging curriculum where they gain hands-on experience in cooking and food preparation. They learn to follow recipes, prepare a variety of dishes, and adapt them to meet specific dietary requirements. Each lesson builds competence in key areas such as hygiene, nutrition, and kitchen safety.
Students also investigate the wider context of food, including the environmental impact of food production, the importance of seasonal ingredients, and the diversity of global cuisines. This integrated approach ensures students not only develop practical cooking skills but also a deeper understanding of food’s role in culture, health, and sustainability.
This comprehensive approach enables students to transition confidently to GCSE, equipped with the knowledge, practical skills, and creative thinking necessary to deepen their understanding and further expand their knowledge of Food Preparation and Nutrition.
In Key Stage 4, students build on their knowledge by deepening their understanding of food preparation, cooking skills, nutrition, and health. They explore nutritional needs, food science principles, food safety, and factors that influence food choices, including food provenance. These concepts are applied and demonstrated through a substantial Non-Exam Assessment (NEA) project and culminate in a GCSE exam, ensuring that students can showcase both their practical abilities and theoretical understanding in Food Preparation and Nutrition.
Foodwise – Cooking on a budget while studying at university is offered as an option as part of the year 12 enrichment program.
