Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions

Information for Parents and Carers

At King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School, we are committed to supporting pupils with medical conditions so that they can access the same education and opportunities as other pupils, including educational visits, extracurricular activities, school trips, and sporting events.

To ensure appropriate support is in place, we work closely with parents and carers to make sure we are aware of all relevant medical conditions and can implement suitable arrangements where necessary.

Asthma Inhalers and Adrenaline Auto-Injectors (EpiPens)

Students prescribed an asthma inhaler, or an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen) should always carry their medication with them whilst in school. This includes during lessons, breaktimes, PE lessons, games activities, educational visits, and any off-site activities. Carrying prescribed emergency medication helps ensure prompt treatment can be given if required and supports the safety and wellbeing of the student throughout the school day.

  1. Providing Up-to-Date Medical Information

Parents and carers must inform the school of any medical conditions, allergies, or health concerns that may affect their child whilst attending school.

Please notify the school in writing if:

  • Your child develops a new medical condition.
  • There are any changes to an existing medical condition.
  • Your child is prescribed medication for a chronic (long-term) condition.
  • Emergency medical information changes.
  • Medical information can be updated via Arbor Parent Portal or by sending a message through Arbor. Alternatively, parents/carers may contact the School Office or Email at enquiry@handsworth.bham.sch.uk./
  • If you have previously informed the school of a medical condition and there are any subsequent changes or updates, these can be emailed directly to your child’s Head of Year (HOY) or Head of Form (HOF) to ensure that school records remain accurate and up to date.
  1. Ensuring School Has the Necessary Medication

If your child has been prescribed medication for a long-term medical condition, please ensure that:

  • The medication is provided to the school.
  • The medication is in date.
  • The medication remains in its original pharmacy packaging.
  • The medication is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

All medication should be handed directly to the School Office.

Asthma Inhalers

Students with asthma should always keep their prescribed inhaler with them.

It is important that students always carry their inhaler during the school day, including during lessons, breaktimes, PE lessons, educational visits, and off-site activities.

Adrenaline Auto-Injectors (EpiPens)

If your child has been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen), a device should be provided to the School Office.

All students prescribed an EpiPen are strongly encouraged to always carry an EpiPen with them whilst in school. As a minimum, students must have their EpiPen with them when attending PE lessons, games activities, or travelling to the school fields.

  1. Short-Term Prescribed Medication

If your child is prescribed medication for a short-term condition, such as a course of antibiotics, and the school has not previously been informed of the condition, parents/carers must complete a Parental Agreement for School to Administer Medication Form.

These forms are available:

  • On the school website
  • From School Reception
  • From the School Office

When submitting medication to school, please ensure that:

  • It is in the original pharmacy packaging.
  • It is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
  • The completed medication form accompanies the medication.

Medication should be handed directly to the School Office and not sent into school with students unless otherwise agreed.
