Two of our highest achieving year thirteen students, Donte Nembhard (left) and Manraj Dhanda (right) were winners recently in the British Physics Olympiad.

The British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) aims to encourage the study of physics and recognise excellence in young physicists through four annual physics competitions.
The competitions are designed to test understanding and problem solving skills and are open to able young physicists in school years 11-13 (GCSE to A2 or equivalent).

Mr Jones, our Head of Science was delighted at the success of the two boys who are both looking forward to exciting futures. Donte has an offer from Cambridge University to study chemical engineering and Manraj is presently waiting to hear from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) the prestigious American university, as he hopes to study maths there.

The Year 11 Football team continue to be successful with a recent 6 – 4 win over Aston Engineering School. Well done.

Forty five boys and four members of staff travelled to Symphony Hall to listen to a special Key Stage 3 Concert given by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.  The concert was hosted by Alastair Malloy, a professional percussionist and composer, who had arranged some music especially for this event. Alastair explained how the orchestra and western music has evolved throughout time, and how certain pieces are structured. This involved a fascinating performance of Beethoven’s famous Symphony No 5 clapped by the orchestra! We also heard the theme to Harry Potter, Angry Birds and Pharrell William’s song ‘Happy’. It was a fantastic experience and was enjoyed by all.

We continue to work with our Community partners on a number of levels and most recently HGS hosted 90 Year 5 Primary school students for some General Science lessons. The Grove School students enjoyed lessons delivered by Mr Mohsin and Ms Bilkhu on separating mixtures as part of their Science curriculum.

Handsworth Grammar School is pleased to be re-awarded its’ NACE membership for showing consistent commitment to provision for more able and talented pupils in school. NACE is the National Association for Able Children in Education.
