Music For Youth Festival – Regional Festival Series 2018
The school’s Woodwind and World Music Ensemble joined forces to perform in the Music for Youth Festival Series 2018. Taking place between January and April every year, the Music for Youth Regional Festival series is the first stop on our annual season, and welcomes 40,000 young musicians to take part in the world’s largest youth music festival in 50 locations nationwide. Our students performed three items; Great Escape, Lincolnshire Poacher and a fusion piece which combined clarinet, recorded and tabla.
The adjudicators wrote the following about the performances : ‘Some stylish solos from clarinet, recorded, table, and all contributing to a very convincing performance. Good intonation in the unison clarinet moments, and a strong ending, bravo. … You are very accomplished as a world music ensemble – build on these strengths …’

Fasting in Ramadan
Some of you will start a month of fasting for Ramadan in the middle of May once the date has been confirmed. This is, no doubt, a special time for you and your families. It is great that you are showing such dedication to your faith and keeping hold of a traditional practice that many other faiths also recognise. Part of the purpose of the month is to bring people and communities together. In this way we hope that the month brings you much happiness and benefit but please do remember that your commitment to school and your education needs also to continue. To help you with this, a few practical tips/reminders follow:
We wish you a happy and prosperous Ramadan. If you do have any further questions or comments then you are welcome to speak to Mr Mohammed (room 10).
Friday 23rd March at KEVI Aston
The last time KEVI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys, KEVI Aston School and KEVI Handsworth School for Girls staged a joint concert together was in 1962! After the success of this reunion I think it is safe to conclude that we will not need to wait as long again for the next joint venture. The evening included a range of solo items and ensembles from the three schools and included some of the finest players from the ‘Three Kings.’ Our school was represented by Isaac Minto, Anu Adeleye, Keir Msuya, Karl Frater, Robert Frater and Godfrey Leung. The boys delivered fantastic performances to a packed school hall. We look forward to another joint concert in the near future.
Mr. Ward
On Wednesday 18 April Britney Okhiria and Matthew Morris delivered feedback from their Lessons from Auschwitz project. This gave 30 Year 10 students a powerful insight into the Holocaust, a topic which they have studied from their GCSE Germany 1890-1945 module. The experiences of the survivors, the unimaginable trauma of the victims and their loved ones as well as broader lessons of genocide were considered. Photographs were also shared with participants to add context and familiarity. Thank you to Britney and Matthew for this informative and very valuable presentation and discussion.

Both our Under 16 and Under 14 Badminton teams finished top of the Aston Badminton Leagues for 2017/2018. The Under 14 team played 6, won 5 and lost 1 which meant they were top of the league with 16 points and their nearest rival was 9 points adrift of them. The Under 16 team played 7 and won 7 and their nearest rival was 10 points adrift of them. Congratulations to both teams and Mr Gallagher for a fantastic season.
