Opening of the Ben Smolden Pavillion and 3G Pitch

The first X1 football team played against a HGS Old boys’ team on July 10th to officially open the new “Ben Smolden Pavillion” and our new 3G pitch. Ben, a former pupil of the school and now a school governor, was there to open our superb facilities, and he and the spectators were treated to a keenly fought contest between a young and energetic school team playing against a more experienced and wiser Old Boys’ team.

In fact, it was experience which won the day, as the Old Boys’ secured a narrow 3-2 victory in a game which was played in a great spirit. The school team was then treated to some real Handsworth hospitality back at the HGS club hose, were they were able to see the second half of the France v Belgium world Cup semi – final.

Many thanks to Ben and to the Old Boys’ club for making the evening so enjoyable for the school players. Hopefully a number of the students will go on to become regular players for the club.
