Daniyal Mehmood – Head Prefect

As Head Prefect at Handsworth Grammar School, I am privileged to lead a school that, for many of us, has played a crucial role in shaping who we are. Secondary school is not just about academic progress but also about discovering our personal identities and aspirations, and Handsworth Grammar School has truly facilitated this journey. The school’s supportive community fosters a unique environment that encourages personal growth alongside academic achievement. Handsworth Grammar School’s academic excellence goes without saying, but what is not common knowledge is the atmosphere that enables bright young minds to achieve such outstanding results. Handsworth Grammar School truly is a unique environment to learn in.

I am proud to be part of a school where collaboration and mutual support are at the heart of student life. The strong relationships between students, whether through mentoring younger pupils, hosting clubs and activities, or engaging in inter-house competitions, create an atmosphere where everyone can thrive. As Head Prefect, I aim to strengthen this sense of unity, ensuring that each student feels supported and empowered to succeed.

My role has allowed me to further develop my communication and leadership skills, particularly during events such as Prize Giving, where I had and will continue to have the opportunity to represent the school and build connections with staff and guests. Through these experiences, I have gained valuable insights into how effective teamwork and dedication can make a meaningful difference.

I also understand that Handsworth Grammar School’s strengths lie not just in its academic success, but in its commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals. Whether through sports, music, drama, or our wide range of extra-curricular and super-curricular activities, this school provides opportunities for all students to explore their passions and develop skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

In my time as Head Prefect, I am committed to maintaining the school’s high standards, fostering a culture of Community, Aspiration, Respect, Endeavour and Service, and ensuring that every student is encouraged to grow and reach their full potential. I believe that Handsworth Grammar School has truly succeeded in creating an environment where students feel at home. It’s a place where, years down the line, when we look back on our time here, we will remember it with fondness as a place that played a key role in shaping who we’ve become.

Khadijah Anjum – Head Prefect

Being appointed Head Prefect at this esteemed institution is both an honour and a significant privilege—one that I carry with immense pride and gratitude. With a longstanding legacy of academic excellence, King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School offers a truly exceptional education to all students, regardless of their diverse backgrounds. It fosters a remarkable community where young minds not only develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills but also cultivate core values such as integrity, compassion, and respect for others.

Every student here is given the opportunity to express themselves—whether academically or through their unique passions and interests. From spirited inter-house competitions to intellectually engaging classroom discussions, every element of school life contributes to a rich tapestry of meaningful experiences. These moments nourish our minds, build our confidence, and equip us with the essential skills that will guide us into the future.

Joining this school as a girl was, for me, a step into the unknown. And while girls remain a minority within the student body, I have felt nothing but a strong sense of community and belonging. I am truly grateful for the welcoming atmosphere fostered by both staff and students, which has allowed me to grow—not only in confidence and communication—but in character. The encouragement and opportunities I have received have opened doors, sparked passions, and helped me discover my true aspirations.

As Head Girl, my goal is to continue nurturing this culture of encouragement and support. I aim to strengthen mentoring schemes and work closely with fellow students to build a positive, empowering environment—one where everyone feels heard, valued, and understood. I also hope to cultivate a space where students feel comfortable questioning the status quo and embracing all forms of diversity.

If I could pass on one core lesson, it would be this: embrace every opportunity, both within and beyond the classroom. Step outside your comfort zone and don’t fear mistakes—for it is through them that we truly learn and grow. Uplift each other, celebrate one another’s successes, and always remember that kindness and respect are just as essential as academic achievement. Let us continue working together to build a brighter future—because there is no doubt that this school is shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Harveer Singh Athwal – Deputy Prefect

Stepping into the role of Deputy Head Prefect at King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School has been both a privilege and a profound responsibility. This institution, with its legacy of academic distinction and unwavering commitment to personal growth, has shaped generations of students—myself included. Here, education is more than grades; it is about cultivating curiosity, resilience, and the courage to pursue one’s ambitions.

Though my journey at HGS has been relatively short, the impact has been profound. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the warmth of the community—a place where every student, regardless of background, is encouraged to thrive. The inclusive spirit of HGS quickly made it clear: this is a school where individuality is celebrated, and potential is limitless. The support from teachers and peers alike has not only bolstered my confidence but also helped me discover passions I never knew I had.

What sets Handsworth Grammar apart is its remarkable balance—between tradition and innovation, discipline, creativity, and ambition. Our rigorous curriculum challenges us intellectually, while the vast array of clubs, societies, and leadership opportunities ensures that every student finds their passion. This is a place where ideas are heard, where collaboration is second nature, and where students are empowered to take ownership of their futures.

As I prepare to embark on the next chapter, I am filled with gratitude for this school and the people within it. HGS doesn’t just educate; it transforms. And for that, I will always be proud to call myself a part of this extraordinary community.

Princess Okereke – Lead Mental Health Ambassador

Mental health is a vital part of every individual’s overall wellbeing and being chosen to support that is an incredibly valuable opportunity. At HGS, there is already a strong culture that promotes both physical and mental wellbeing, a warm, welcoming atmosphere where students feel safe to open up and lean on others when needed.

As an external student, I can personally attest to how inclusive and supportive the environment is and that encouraged me to step forward to maintain and create an even better one as a Lead Mental Health Ambassador.

When applying for this position, I was asked to choose one word that represents what I would bring to the role. My word was care, and that sentiment continues to guide all that I do. Whether it’s organising events that create awareness of mental health, leading form-time activities, running games clubs or simply offering a listening ear to a fellow student, care stays at the heart of what we do as mental health ambassadors.

As ambassadors, we have been trained to recognise signs of distress and to guide students towards the appropriate support when necessary. Our aim is to ensure that no one feels alone, that every student feels valued, understood and supported in every aspect of school life.

It is a real honour to serve in this role. Seeing younger students grow in confidence and build meaningful connections is incredibly rewarding. My hope is that HGS continues to be a place students look forward to coming each day, a safe haven of comfort, compassion, and encouragement alongside academic success.
