University of Manchester Computer Competition Success

We received excellent news for two of our Year 9 Computer Science students (Anuoluwa Adeleye and Harjap Bahra) who entered the Animation17 UK Schools Computer Animation Competition with the University of Manchester. 570 students from 102 schools across the UK submitted entries so we are really pleased for them both – their entry has been highly commended by both the BCS eSafety team and Professor Robert Stevens from the University of Manchester Computer Science department. They are the 2017 Key Stage 3 Group Runners Up and were awarded the BCS eSafety Highly Commended status.

Framed certificates and prizes should be with us before the end of term. Well done boys!

Envision

ENVISION | The Community-Apprentice: The Boardroom Final Challenge

The Envision Community-Apprentice Programme is an extra-curricular activity where Sixth Form students from select schools across Birmingham, Bristol and London are involved. As part of the programme students work with select regional and national businesses to develop projects within the school that impact on the local community.

It is run as an inter-school competition, with 30 teams from 15 schools competing in the follow three key areas:

  • To create as largest a social impact as possible with respect to their chosen key issue
  • To show case their development of key personal skills and qualities
  • To successfully discuss, before a panel of judges, the impact of their project by recalling the key challenges experienced and how they were overcome

We were pleased to see Team Odyssey (members listed below) qualify to the final round of the competition, which was held on Wednesday 14th June 2017. They were one of only four teams invited to The Boardroom Final to present to the Leader of Birmingham City Council as well as judges from Marks and Clerk (attorneys) in a final attempt to convince them that they should be crowned winners of The Community-Apprentice 2017. It was encouraging to see culmination of their year-long, hard work unfold in what can only be described as a ‘professional and engaging’ presentation; to a panel of critical judges. Furthermore, it was pleasing to see them successfully navigate their way through the challenging inquisition into the construction, management, delivery and impact of their project.

The winning team will be announced at the graduation ceremony on the afternoon of Wednesday 5th July 2017. During this event, hosted by Envision, the hard work of over 300 students from across Birmingham will be celebrated at The H Suite, 100 Icknield Port Rd, Birmingham B16 0AA. The event also promises to hold an ‘Opportunities Fayre’, where representatives from a range of different organisations and sectors will be promoting potential work opportunities and career paths for students to consider post education.
