General Information

The awarding bodies set down strict criteria which must be followed for the conduct of examinations and King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys is required to follow them precisely. In this section, you will find information about the rules and regulations set out by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) that governs the awarding bodies.

The examination window for Summer 2024 is from 9 May 2024 until 25 June 2024.

KEVI HGS Overall Timetable for Summer 2024

There are three contingency days designated for next year- Afternoon of Thursday 6 June 2024, Afternoon of Thursday 13th June 2024, and all day on Wednesday 26 June 2024. Students must be available for examination up to these dates. These are additional days set aside should any sustained national or significant local disruption arise during the Summer 2024 examination series.

This means that all exam candidates must be available to sit examinations until Wednesday 26 June 2024. No special consideration will be granted for a candidate who misses an examination that is rescheduled by the JCQ or Awarding Body.

Results Days

A Level Results Day will be Thursday 15 August 2024.

GCSE Results Day will be on Thursday 22 August 2024.


Students are strongly advised to collects their certificates from school when available as we are only legally obliged to keep them for one year. We do not post certificates out in case they are lost in the post.

If you are an ex-student and require your certificates, please email examinations@handsworth.bham.sch.uk so that an appropriate collection time can be arranged if we still have them in school.

Post Results Examination Information

Enquiry about results

If you are unhappy about an exam result, you can request a clerical re-check of marking (‘review of results’) or request the marked paper (‘access to scripts’).

Your grade can go down as well as up.  A review is the standard speed service for any student.  A priority review is a quicker service for students whose place at a university or other higher education institution depends on the outcome.

You can request these services for individual units or components. The fees listed below are per paper not per subject.

Awarding bodies will only accept applications for reviews of marking from centres and not from candidates or their parents.

What services are available?

Service 1 – Clerical re-check

A clerical re-check of a marked paper will make sure that:

  • all pages have been marked
  • all marks have been counted
  • result matches the marks on the paper

A clerical re-check takes up to 10 calendar days.

Service 2 – Review and priority review of marking

If you request a review or priority review of marking:

  • it includes a clerical re-check
  • a second examiner will review the paper/recording again to identify genuine marking errors or unreasonable marking
  • make sure all marks are counted

How long does it take

Up to 20 calendar days for a review of marking. Up to 15 calendar days for a priority review of marking.

Access to Scripts – Priority copy of marked paper

This is a photocopy or scanned copy of the marked exam paper that you can use to decide whether to request a review of marking or a clerical re-check.

Access to Scripts – Original marked paper

Centre staff may request access to original or scanned copy of marked papers to use for teaching and learning purposes. A Candidate consent form for access must be signed by the candidate, which must be retained for six months.

Awarding bodies will send out original papers once the post-results deadline has passed.


Fees for post-results services (Access to Scripts, clerical re-checks, reviews of marking and reviews of moderation) are set independently by each awarding body and must be paid to school via Schoolcomms before any applications can be submitted to the awarding body on your behalf.

For clerical checks and reviews of marking, the fee will only be refunded if overall subject grades are amended, whether upwards or downwards.

Please note fees are per paper not per subject.  Priority services are not available for all qualifications.

Outcome of Enquiries

The outcome of each enquiry will be confirmed by the respective awarding body. These will be sent to candidates via email.

UCAS will be advised of any changes to GCE qualification grades.

Candidates need to be aware that grades can go down, remain the same or go up.  All consent forms or emails from candidates will be retained and kept for six months following the outcome of the review of marking or any subsequent appeal.
